U.S. Accounts For A Quarter Of Spam In March

By Mike Sachoff

In its monthly report, "The State of Spam: -April 2008," Symantec said that spam averaged 81 percent of all email for the month of March 2008, close to a quarter of which came from the United States.

The Symantec report revealed that spammers are using mail transfer agent (MTA) programs and using a technique called backscatter to forge sending email addresses and bounce large amounts of emails.

Chinese spammers continued to send phone sex emails in March, as Symantec pointed out in its February spam report.

The month also saw reappearance of the 419 Nigerian spam scammers, who sent spam emails telling recipients they have won $2 million in promotion of the 2010 South African World Cup, and asking the "winners" to provide personal information to process the funds.

With tax day around the corner, Symantec said there was an increase in malicious spam messages claiming to be from the IRS or tax programs like TurboTax.

According to Commtouch's monthly report on spam, spammers used Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day and April Fools Day to send high levels of spam.

The Commtouch report said spam levels range from 60-94 percent of all email through the first quarter of 2008.
